Well, this post will probably be a bit boring so I apologize in advance. I've had two solid training weeks with the new coach. The highlight of the week was, once again, the tempo run. This time he had a 5 x 1 mile at 6:20 pace on the schedule with 2 minutes rest in between. I must admit that the tempo run puts fear into me. I decided to try the run on the treadmill to keep my pace even. I managed to do 2 x 1 mile on the treadmill at 6:15 pace, but since I hadn't run on a treadmill in years I decided I needed to do the last 3 on the Y indoor track so I didn't have a nasty accident on the treadmill. I managed the last 3 in 6:15, 6:30 and 6:30. I needed 3 to 4 minutes of rest in between each one though.
I ended up with 50 running miles for the week including a 20.5 mile long run today in 3 hours. I'm awaiting next week's schedule to see what's on tap. I do have a 50k scheduled next week as part of my training to work on pacing and fueling. For those who are interested, you can check out my workouts on my sidebar under my Attackpoint log.
That's all I have. Happy Running!

You out ran me by 5.3 miles. Glad you are enjoying your work outs - I know you like challenges and this gives you weekly doses in manageable proportions for during the school year. Keep it up!
It's good to see the new focus with a new coach. I look forward to seeing the long-term results. Way to run, Rob!
That is one tough workout. I could not have kept that pace in a training run.
Hi Rob, thanks for the comments, and no, the snow keeps on piling up! More this week! The trouble is that there is no melting happening between storms, due to the temp staying consistently below freezing. Oh well, it is New England. I secretly wish to move up to your neck of the woods in the Pac-Northwest for the more temperate climate. :-)
I hear you with the fear of tempo runs and general speedwork. Even now that I am separated from organized training and coaches, before I do any speedwork I always feel the anxiety and discomfort before the attempt at blazing speed, even though I know I have nothing to lose, and no one holding a watch barking splits!
Good luck with your 50k training run :-), definitely jealous!
Peace!
What is Paul using as a basis for that 6:20 LT pace?
Joe
I had to do intervals on the treadmill the other night and I kept getting this twinge in my calf and I had this vision of me flying off the back of that thing after my calf seizing up! I love treadmills for making me be less lazy, but I am just waiting for my first accident!
That quote is so true!
Glad to hear that training with the new coach is so productive!
Thanks for running / power hiking in with me for those last couple miles of Yours Truly. I had a 75 mile week last week.
Sounds like training with the coach is going well! Nice!
wow! I am cracking up over the thought of you on a treadmill though - seriously, it doesn't quite look like the single track trails I picture you on when I think of you!
I almost said hi to some dude on a bike this morning that I swore looked like you! I tried to make eye contact for a second, but finally decided I better leave before someone got the idea I was stalking people at the Y!
Sounds like those tempo runs are working nicely. keep it up.
I'm jealous that you have a coach, but not so jealous of that speedwork. Yikes! Sounds like you're doing great. :)
great training week...nice mix of workouts...hope this week is going well
The question: "Can I give more?" Sometimes the answer is another question: "And to what do I want to give more?" Seems like you are finding the best answers for you.
Not boring just informative. I love to read about how fast everyone is running and how it is scary! Sounds like you are running very well!
Stay the course, Rob. And the total mileage is impressive. I just cleared 25 for the week and felt accomplished...till I saw your weekly number. Hooray for you!
okay. maybe i shouldn't have read this after housework, but i have asked myself if i could give any more. i say no. or maybe i could, but i won't. my back won't.
i think i'll need that quotation as i attack or abandon running. can i give more. hm. that's my question. it's my slings and arrows to be or not to be right now.
