Sunday was the first annual, or maybe the one and only, West Seattle Fat Ass 50k. The course was a double out and back through the neighborhoods in West Seattle that run "parallel" to the shore of Puget Sound. The weather was perfect and everything was smooth sailing throughout.
My plan was to practice race strategy using a 13:30-1:30 run/walk strategy and also taking a GU every 1/2 hour and salt every hour. I didn't really have a plan about pace, but tried to run easy, but not too easy. How's that for preciseness?
I started off running with Lesa and catching up on running goals etc. until it was time for my walk break. I worked on walking quickly and then continued running the same pace that I left off at. The strategy worked well except when I needed to use the restroom when it wasn't a walk break. I adjusted at that point, but was able to pretty much stick with the plan. The fueling seemed to work well also.
Most of the second half, Lesa and I ran together and worked into a routine of me walking and then catching up with her 5-7 minutes later, running with her for 6-8 minutes, taking my walk break and then repeating the process. It was a good strategy for both of us as we both slowed down the last 7-8 miles, but stayed close together. I was thinking that under 5 hours was a good goal and was able to make it in at 4:56:35. Lesa was a minute or so behind me.
I was satisfied with the race and ended up with ~60 miles for the week that included a 30 minute tempo run at 6:40 pace, some intervals mixed into another run along with a couple other easy runs. I am looking forward to the shorter long run this weekend, but am also trying to run all 7 days for the next month or so to increase the mileage a bit. This is a difficult task for me, but I am focused on doing what is needed to improve. Therefore, I have nothing more to add. I need to get outside for a run.
"Running is the classical road to self-consciousness, self-awareness and self-reliance. Independence is the outstanding characteristic of a runner. He learns the harsh reality of his physical and spiritual limitations when he runs. He learns that personal commitment, sacrifice and determination are his only means to betterment. Runners get promoted only through self-conquest." Noel Coward

Sounds like you are off to a good running year, keep it up. I love that quote from Coward!
Funny, I just wrote about my own haphazard run-walk system and all the trouble it caused me. Of course, mine wasn't structured but I had to use the restroom a few times. Sounds like you had a really nice run -- and a good time for 31+ miles at varying speeds. Well done, Rob!
Sounds like a good plan Stan, errr Rob :-)
Nice write-up and run, Rob! I think that run/walk strategy will keep you going the full 24 hours in March.

For once I didn't have FOMO, not even a bit! That's progress of it's own kind.
Run/walk is good, I'm all for it. I caught the part where you mentioned walking fast, too. Just remember, your reason for walking is different from mine, so I'm sticking to my slow-poke walk. Glad it all went so well for you!
Another good race for you - nice! Good luck with your running every day. That's tough to do with everything else that pops up in life. I hope you're able to reach your goal.
30 minute tempo run at 6:40, sweet, that's a great pace. So after running 7 days a week for the next month, will you then go back down to taking rest days? I'm looking to increase my mileage as well but still unwilling to let go of my one rest day which is Monday. If my weekends are done right I'm usually quite thankful for Mondays. Great job on the 50k, lately I've been having problems with gels. Not GI issues but more like desire issues. I've lost my desire to eat gels. I've been switching flavors and brands and that's helping a bit. Hopefully it's just a phase, they are still darn efficient in getting in the quick calories.
If the run/walk won't work for Pac Rim 24 Hr. then perhaps a cart of doughnuts towed just in front of you would keep you going for the entire 24.
Nice work going sub-5 Rob. I had some FOMO but our weekend was enough to overcome it.
PS - I'll be running the Valentine Marathon to complete my 13 in 12 next week.
Wow! You are off to a great start in 2009! :)
I like the weird half minute element to the run walk schedule. Me being mister creative would have probably done something like 13:00 and 2:00 or 12:00 and 3:00. The leap frog aspect of R:W is kind of fun, don't you think?
Well done Rob, my feet would fall off if I ever ran 60 miles in one week. And that 6:40 pace for 30 minutes would collapse a lung or something.
Great quote! Thanks. I got some good ideas from your fueling strategy
nice job, rob! And tempo runs too! WOW!!
So, are you having fun yet? it seems like having a plan is working out pretty well...
Another 50k in the books and it has seemed to have gone rather smoothly. Your moderate consistent plan is working!
Excellent strategy for your 50K. It may be easier to take a minute walk every lap at Pac Rim.
When I grow up I want to be an ultrarunner just like you. :)
That's a very useful R/W ratio, Rob...thanks for pointing it out.
The Gu and salt schedule must have worked too.
You've helped me find a similar combo and I'm apprecaiteive. Glad it worked well for you. Sub 5 is really impressive.
